Horse buying and selling hints and tips

Selling your horse easily and quickly

10 easy steps!

  1. Find the correct price. It should be reasonable depending on the situation, training involved, age, conformation, skill, personality, colour, breeding etc. If you can, ask a previous seller for advice.
  2. Provide a good, honest picture. A picture really says 1000 words. It should show the horse’s full conformation and build. It also shouldn’t cover up any markings, cuts, injuries, or scars. Another picture with the horse in action also helps.
  3. Tell all negative and positive habits your horse has. The potential buyer will know what they can fix in the horse and know you as an honest person, giving you a good reputation if you sell other horses.
  4. Advertise. Online, magazines, newspapers. The greater the coverage, the more potential buyers will see your horse. Remember, it’s free to list on Horse Board or you make your advert “sticky” for only £1.99 - stay at the TOP of the page, receive up to 33% more views and INCREASE your contact rate.
  5. Use video as part of your advertising. Online videos will sell your horse a lot faster.
  6. Give your horse’s background information. What it’s been trained in/by, if it’s been bred/foaled or if it has won anything.
  7. Keep your horse clean and groomed. Lots of potential buyers like to look at a horse when you least expect it in order to see if you’re hiding something. This also gives a good first impression.
  8. Keep your horse fit. Muscle sells better and you don’t want your horse to not behave or be gasping for air when the potential owner rides it.
  9. List your horse by what it’s suitable for. Kid-safe, bomb-prof, man’s horse, lady’s hors, etc.
  10. Give the correct information. Why you’re selling it, age, price, training, conformation, injuries, if it is up-to-date on all shots, shoes, de-worming, and loads, clips and ties.

Dos and don’ts

  • Do have your horse prepared (tuned-up, groomed, and clean).
  • Do be prepared to answer any questions.
  • Don’t be dishonest (you’ll end up in trouble eventually).
  • Don’t be forced into making an on-the-spot decision or sell your horse for less money than you feel it’s worth.

Buying the right horse

Whether it’s your first or twenty first(!), finding the right horse isn’t always easy. Follow our handy tips below for a happy horse buying experience.

  1. Speak with your trainer. Ask if he/she will help with your search. Your trainer knows you and your riding style – if anyone can spot the perfect horse, your trainer can!
  2. Look far and wide! It goes without saying that you should use horseboard.co.uk ;-) but there are several other horse-classified websites to choose from. Check horse for sale and horse for loan pages on Facebook and try keyword searches in your favourite search engine. Also, don’t just use the Internet, keep an eye out for adverts posted in and around local horse shows and livery yards.
  3. Set the date. Found a contender? Arrange a visit, ride the horse and if possible, have your trainer with you. Even if you think you’ve found a horse, don’t stop looking. The more horses you try the better. Take a camera/camcorder and record yourself riding the horse – this way you can compare all the horses you’ve seen.
  4. Try before you buy. Found your perfect horse? Ask if you can take the horse on trial. A reasonable trial period is anywhere between two to three weeks.
  5. Book a vet check. Your vet will perform a number of tests to check the horse for any underlying problems. Keep in mind that people still buy horses that fail vet checks but pass or fail; the result will allow you to make a more informed decision.
  6. Negotiate! Buying a horse can be an expensive purchase. Even if your budget will stretch, try and negotiate. Everybody likes saving a bit of money!
